Pasifika voices at the heart – Auckland fono sets the tone for national strategy

Talofa lava, Mālō e lelei, Kia orāna, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Bula vinaka, Mālō ni, and warm Pacific greetings.

More than 60 people gathered in Ōtara last month for the first of CCS Disability Action’s Pasifika Gathering – a series of community gatherings designed to shape the organisation’s National Pasifika Strategy.

The Auckland event brought together Pasifika disabled people, their aiga, community leaders, and CCS Disability Action staff in a vibrant, welcoming space filled with laughter, connection, and powerful storytelling.

“This first fono was a beautiful example of what’s possible when we come together with open hearts and shared purpose,” said Tilomai Solia, a member of the Pasifika Working Group. “It was a celebration of culture, connection, and courage – and a powerful step toward a strategy that truly reflects our people.”

A space for connection and change

The day was designed to centre the voices of Pasifika disabled people and their families, recognising them as the experts in their own lives. Participants shared their experiences, hopes, and challenges, helping to shape themes that reflect the values and aspirations of disabled Pasifika people across Aotearoa.

It provided a valuable opportunity to connect and learn.

“The conversations were rich, and the room was full of people who not only wanted to share their own story but hear the stories of others. No one wanted to leave,” said Berne Peters, parent and National Manager - Kaitiaki Services for CCS Disability Action.

“What a great opportunity to discuss our interests and needs,” attendee Matalena Moliola agreed. “I really enjoyed meeting new people and hearing the voices of others. The food was delicious. God bless you all.”

Finau (Vasi) Niuhulu also appreciated the opportunity to connect around a shared sense of purpose. “It was great meeting with disability leaders and families. Great new information that I heard and experienced.”

A strong start to a national conversation

The event was co-designed and facilitated by the Pasifika Working Group, which includes CCS Disability Action staff and community members. Their leadership helped create a space that felt safe, welcoming and culturally grounded.

The Auckland fono was attended by 66 people, including 15 people supported by CCS Disability Action and their aiga, 19 community members, six representatives from external Pasifika agencies, and 26 CCS Disability Action staff.

The CCS Disability Action team were grateful for the opportunity to support the fono.

“The Pasifika disabled community that attended were so warm and open and honest in sharing their experiences,” said Bettina Syme, CCS Disability Action General Manager Northern region. “I was also proud of how we came together as staff from across the motu, seamlessly integrating to support disabled people and their families.”

The event drew praise from community partners, as well. Vitinia Waqairatu, Team Leader Tagata Sa'ilimalo, Vaka Tautua, shared positive feedback with CCS Disability Action staff, commending the team’s efforts and their commitment to collaboration.
