ADAPT: Building skills, confidence, and community in Horowhenua

Every Tuesday morning, the Levin Uniting Community Centre comes alive with the sound of shuttlecocks, laughter, and conversation. It’s the home of ADAPT, a community-led programme created by CCS Disability Action and Levin United Community Centre that’s creating a safe, inclusive space for disabled people to connect, learn, and grow.

The group offers a mix of activities – from badminton and other sports to crafts, colouring, and preparing and sharing kai. But the vision goes beyond recreation. ADAPT is designed to evolve organically, adding life skills such as budgeting, CV writing, and linking participants with organisations that can support their goals.

“Every week is different, and that keeps people engaged,” says Sharleen Fields, CCS Disability Action Horowhenua Service Coordinator. “It’s not just about the activities; it’s about building self-belief and connections that last beyond the sessions.”

A space for connection and confidence

The programme is aimed at teenagers, young adults, and older participants – anyone looking for a welcoming environment to build confidence and independence. The goal is to create a space where people can come together, share skills, and support each other.

Recent highlights show the power of this approach. After reading about ADAPT in the local paper, one community member brought in a Meccano set and spent two hours guiding a participant through building a complex creation. It was a small gesture with a big impact – a reminder that sharing skills can spark pride and possibility.

“Moments like that show what ADAPT is all about,” says Sharleen. “It’s about creating opportunities for people to discover what they can do and feel proud of it.”

Growing together

ADAPT is still in its early stages, but the vision is clear: a self-sustaining group with light-touch support from organisations when needed. The programme is already attracting attention, with coverage in the Horowhenua Chronicle and strong community interest.

Nau mai, haere mai! Everyone is welcome – whether to join in, volunteer, or share a skill. Bring a craft, a game, or simply your company. Together, we’re building a space where skills meet friendship.

ADAPT meets every Tuesday at 10am at Levin Uniting Community Centre. Sessions restarted for 2026 on 13 January.
