This role offers you an exciting opportunity to become involved in organisation making a difference and to use and develop your support skills within our Otago community. Our work is undertaken alongside disabled people, their family/whanau, and supports the individual’s needs in a person directed, creative way, making a difference in the community.
As a Community Support Worker, you might be supporting someone to visit the library, go swimming, do their shopping, work towards getting their driver's licence, plan a trip, or achieve another important personal goal, so being able to:
Ensure that disabled people can live in their own homes and participate in their own community by accessing opportunities of their choosing as detailed in their Personal Plan.
Provide support to promote confidence, skill building, independence, quality of life and inclusion within the family / whānau and the wider community is of utmost importance.
With the support of our organisation, you’ll:
Ensure disabled people have the ability to reach their identified goals in an enabling, culturally respectful and unobtrusive manner.
Ensure the support work is driven by the person we support individual Personal Plan.
Ensure the service delivery is creative, flexible, and responsive to the needs of the disabled person and in line with CCS Disability Actions values and mandates.
Provide empowering, competent, and respectful support consistent with the cultural values of the individual, and his or her whānau.
Our organisation takes a social, rather than medical approach, supporting disabled people to live their best lives. We are guided by the Enabling Good Lives principles, shifting power and authority back to disabled people and their families, to increase choice and control in their lives.
About you
We are looking for people who enjoy spending time with a wide range of people in the community and who are passionate about helping others live the life they choose.
Have an understanding of the disability sector and ability to relate to people with disabilities in a positive affirming manner.
Demonstrates commitment Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the UN Convention of the Rights of Disabled People.
You will be someone who can think creatively, work alongside others, and support people to build independence, make choices, and connect with their community.
A full driver's licence is preferred, you may also be a public transport expert.
Careerforce, up to and including Level 2 training or equivalent (or prepared to take on Careerforce training to achieve this level).
