‘Tēnei au. This is me, here I am’ will support disabled people, whānau and service providers to understand the Enabling Good Lives (EGL) principles and approach through a series of free gatherings across Aotearoa.
These will explore the ways people can make the most of the opportunities that the EGL principles and approach offer and connect and support communities to have these conversations, strengthen voices and create change.
The EGL approach is underpinned by the following principles:
- self-determination
- beginning early
- person-centred
- ordinary life outcomes
- mainstream first
- mana enhancing
- easy to use
- relationship building.
These principles can be applied regardless of what services are currently available in your community. Disabled people and their whānau and disability support providers, do not need to wait for EGL contracts to be ‘rolled out’ in their community in order to adopt the principles.
The project is guided by a steering group made up of disabled people and whānau of disabled people.

While direct support staff are welcome at our disabled person's gatherings, in order to create an environment where disabled people's voices are heard, we invite staff from disability support providers to register for our provider-specific events.
